Appearance: Balthier is a rather handsome man with greyish-brown eyes and light brown hair, cut short. Both of his ears are pierced many times and on his left hand he wears a variety of colorful rings.

Balthier wears an intricately designed gold vest with a white shirt beneath and black leather pants ending just above the ankle. Attached to two crossed belts at his waist are two item pouches, one on each side. He wears a pair of sandals, closed toe, which covers up most of his foot with the end of the toe curled up slightly.


Personality: Balthier is an even mixture of smugness and charm. He is confident in himself almost to the point of arrogance and able to keep calm in almost any situation, often with a witty comment or two up his sleeve. When speaking to others, the conversation is often laced with casual sarcasm, even in serious discussion. In fact, when he isn’t laying down such comments, it isn’t too far off to assume that he isn’t feeling well.

He acts self-interested, but has a noble heart deep down, doing a little extra beyond his current job if he believes it is right—though he will never admit that he’s doing so. In fact, he would love for people to continue to believe that he’s only out for himself, since he feels it keeps him from unwanted responsibilities that people would otherwise place upon him.

Abilities: Balthier is able to keep calm and collected in most situations and isn’t quick to anger. He can think on the fly quite easily, able to develop a plan or improvise in seconds.

Balthier is an adept marksman and a fairly good swordsman. He also knows plenty of magic from his world, though its variety and availability have been greatly diminished. For the most part, Balthier is confined to Cure and the basic elemental spells, and, at most, he can only cast about three times per day (possibly less depending on the power put behind it).

Weaknesses: Perhaps Balthier’s most glaring weakness is his belief that he is “the leading man.” This belief adds to his arrogance (or may have been born from it), and has given him a small want to be in the spotlight. Because of that, he might put a little bit more showmanship into something than is necessary, but his self-preservation tends to not let him go further than that.

That is, it won’t let him go further than that unless the second half of his belief kicks in. Because Balthier thinks himself to be the leading man, he believes that he is invincible. Sure, he may take a few punches here and there, but in the end he’ll be good as new and ready for the next adventure. Because of this, he is likely to take more risky maneuvers and/or be a little too daring. The fact that he has survived such attempts time after time has probably reinforced it in his mind.


Manhattanite or outsider? Outsider

History: Ffamran was born in Archades, the capitol of the Archadian Empire and the city of scientific breakthroughs in Ivalice. As the son of Cidolphus Demen Bunansa, Archadia’s greatest scientist, Ffamran lived an easy life of privilege. He was close to his father, learning everything he could from him.

With the aid of his father’s influence, Ffamran became one of Archadia’s Judges. It was during his time as Judge that he began to realize that his father was going completely insane.

Cid had been talking of nethicite, speaking to someone named “Venat” when there was seemingly no one there ever since he had come back from his trip to the ancient city of Giruvegan. Ffamran was deeply disturbed, but stayed in Archadia until he could take no more, resigning from his position as Judge.

He chose the one profession furthest from the Judge he was before: sky pirate. He stole an airship about to be destroyed due to cost inefficiency and fled the city. He called himself “Balthier” now, a way to further distance himself from his life before. The airship he named the Strahl, and made a few adjustments to. In the years following his flight from Archades, he met Fran and became hunted by Ba’Gamnan, the bounty hunter.

A few years later, during an attempted robbery of the Dalmascan treasury, Balthier met Vaan, a boy living in Rabanastre who had dreams of becoming a sky pirate himself, and Ashe, the supposedly dead princess of Dalmasca who had joined up with a resistance group under an assumed name. Balthier, Fran, and Vaan were arrested and sentenced to the Nalbina dungeons. In escaping from there, they met Basch, a former soldier of Dalmasca who had been framed for the king’s death by his twin brother.

Balthier and Fran attempted to go their own way once the party was out of the dungeon, but they were approached again in order to save Penelo, Vaan’s friend who had been kidnapped by Ba’Gamnan after a misundertanding to lure Balthier into a trap. The events following that led to Balthier and Fran becoming part of the Dalmascan resistance, albeit a reluctant part.

The reluctance changed, at least for Balthier, when the existence of the Occuria (god-like beings which watched over Ivalice) was discovered, as well as their connection to Cid through their dissenter, Venat, the one that Cid had really been talking to.

Balthier’s final encounter with his father came at the top of the Pharos of Ridorana. Dr. Cid was killed in the ensuing fight, but not before he brought forth the sky fortress Bahamut, which would become the Empire’s greatest and newest weapon.

The resistance infiltrated the fortress, which was above and hammering down upon Rabanastre. There, they confronted Vayne Solidor, the Empire’s emperor-by-murder, and defeated him. However, the sky fortress was beginning to fall.

Balthier and Fran stayed behind, looking for a way to get the Bahamut moving again and keep it from crashing into the city below. They barely managed to escape before the fortress fell. Vaan was in possession of the Strahl for a year before Balthier and Fran stole it back.
